What Is The BGP Network?
BGP means Border Gateway Protocol and is an interautonomous system routing protocol. The interautonomous is a group of networks that have a common administration with the same or parallel routing policies. A Bgp network is the protocol that is used between all internet service providers in routing information over the internet.
The Bgp network is a very large routing protocol as proven by the employment by the internet which is the most widely used network in the world. For the Bgp network to achieve this large scale, it has to use many route parameters which are called attributes and these define the routing policies and maintains a stable routing environment. The routes in the Bgp network are used to determine the best route to a destination when multiple path exist to a particular destination. These Bgp network attributes include weight, local preference, multi-exit discriminator, origin, AS_path, next hop, community.
Within the Bgp network, the weight attribute is a Cisco proprietary technology that is common to all routers. If there are several routes going to the same destination, then the route that has the most weight will be the one that is preferred.
The Bgp network local preference attribute is just the opposite of the weight attribute. This attribute tells where the router is going to exit the destination and which local route is preferred. The multi-exit discriminator attribute of the Bgp network is used as a suggestion to an external automonous regarding the preferred route. The origin attribute of the Bgp network indicates how the Bgp learned about a particular route. The AS_path attribute is the list number of the advertisement that the route passes through. The next hop attribute is the IP address that is used to reach the advertising router and the community attribute in the Bgp network provides a way of grouping all of the destinations which are called communities. Other then the Bgp network, there are other protocols that are also used. These are RIP and IGRP among others. The difference between the Bgp network and other protocols is the fact that the Bgp is an exterior protocol and the others are interior. The exterior protocol is used for very large private networks that expand across the globe and the internet service providers. The interior protocols are mainly used for LAN or local area network or maybe a network of 50 or less users such as in a small office. The Bgp network is the reason that everyone who owns personal computers can get on the internet. Without the internet service providers being able to use the Bgp network in order to connect and communicate between the networks, then there would be hardly any kind of information on the internet which would probably mean that there would be no internet.
