Many IT professionals have realized that in the coming years, they need to start creating a network disaster recovery plan and most of them have already started. All of this fear came about after the 911 attack at the Twin Towers. The buildings went down, people were killed and this was the foremost terror that was focused on. But when all the dust cleared and a few years time had passed, they realized exactly how much information was lost due to all the computers and mainframes being destroyed at well.
A network disaster recovery plan is IT professionals going through a series of actions that need to be taken in the event of a major unplanned event in order to minimize the diverse effects of that event. Disasters can be major power outages, hacker attacks, computer viruses, underground cable cuts or failures, fire, flood, earthquake, and other natural disasters at a facility, mistakes in system administration, or terror attacks on our country to be the extreme.
Business continuity is tied in with a disaster recovery network because they both ensure that an organization's critical business processes can be maintained in the event of any disaster.
The network disaster recovery plan is extremely important to all industries because if executed properly, it could save large sums of money, can improve the quality of life, and in some cases, can even save lives. For an example of bettering the lives of human, the 911 attacks caused large scale network outages that affected the fiber optic telecommunications network and cell phone usage. Besides the major loss and financial impact it had on Wall Street firms due to the lost data connectivity, there were many people that could not use their phones to call their loved ones to see if they were OK. The Disaster Recovery Network is designed to focus primarily on planning and prevention. Since the attacks of 911 could not have been prevented like other disasters such as mother nature, there are aspects about these disasters that can be analyzed and possibly made better in a similar circumstance that we all hope will not occur, but if it does, then we all want to be as ready as we can be. The Disaster recovery network plan takes into account the need to detect the outages or other disaster effects as quickly as possible, notify any affected parties so that they can take action, isolate the affected systems so that damage cannot spread, and repair the critical affected systems so that operations can be resumed. The three main components of the network disaster recovery plan are the data, the systems, and the people. Most firms, in today's world, rely on some form of redundancy which allows system resources to be pushed into service on short notice. But, most of these firms usually have some form of backup strategies in order to archive copies of critical data at any given point so that they can be restored at a later time.
